Demonstrating data technology for conservation and farming innovation
Harper Adams Digital Innovation Farm
As a specialist agriculture university, we are working alongside our commercial farm and researchers to become a sustainable farm enterprise. Through investing in technological solutions and wireless connections, our farm aims to be ecologically sound, economically viable and socially responsible.
We aim to demonstrate and evaluate a range of commercially available sensors and technologies for farming and conservation activities which use various types of advanced wireless network solutions.
We have developed seven use cases to explore which fall within three key themes: Asset Management, Rural Health and Precision Farming.

Advanced Wireless Connections
Mobile Networks
Wide-area wireless connectivity supporting activities like real-time monitoring, communication and access to information on mobile devices.
Wi-Fi
Reliable local connectivity, ideal for powering smart equipment, automating processes and connecting to devices within farm buildings.
LoRaWAN
Long-range low-power communication solution for ‘Internet of Things’ devices widely distribute across the rural environment. Perfect for monitoring environmental conditions, livestock movements or weather stations.

Use Case Themes
Asset Management
Keeping track of your assets from equipment and tools through to system maintenance and farmland biodiversity.
Rural Health
A focus on connecting technologies that improve health and welfare of livestock through real-time environmental monitoring.
Precision Farming
Advanced technologies aimed to optimize farm processes such as crop management and yield predictions
